Sports conditioning is a service designed to be targeted at a specific sport. The exercises will be aimed at developing your strength in a tackle, the height you can jump or the speed that you can hit a golf ball. All sports can benefit from this style of conditioning. Olympic style weightlifting is vital to this form of conditioning; it will develop total body power that will translate to sporting performance. Some sessions can be done with whole teams and others with a certain component of a team or individual e.g. rugby forwards. The Olympic lifting will take place in a purpose built weightlifting facility where the weights can be lifted (and dropped!) in the safest possible manner. The sessions will also involve exercises to reduce the risk of injury, as it doesnt matter how good you are at your sport if you are on the bench. |

I have started my role as Lead Strength and Conditioning Coach for sportBU at Bournemouth University and I thought I would show you how hard our athletes are training. You can also follow sportBU and my other athletes on my blog at http://conditioningcentre.blogspot.com/ We have a variety of tools for conditioning our athletes: Olympic Lifting We have 2 platforms and sets of Ivanko and Pallini Olympic weights which we use every day to develop the athletes. The lifts take some time to teach but once mastered they are an incredible tool for developing power. Here is a look at one of the lifts: Split Clean.
The Sled If there is one tool that will get your athletes competitive and working hard it is the sled. Often underestimted on the first meeting but never again. Here is one of our volleyball players trying a low level push.
Outdoor Conditioning To allow us to work with full teams we have added outdoor conditioning to the programme. This style is something different from the gym but definitely works the athletes in a way they have never felt before. This is a video of our Rugby team doing work and getting a mix of full body stength and power and also a solid conditioning session for fitness:
